Inquinal Hernia Repair- How long off the bike?

There are a few hernia threads on the forums and the recommendations are all over the place. I am scheduled for an open-incision repair on the right side later this week. My surgeon said no lifting over 15 lbs or sit-ups or push-ups for at least 3 weeks. I asked about cycling and he said that I could walk or ride a bike as soon as I felt like it. Most of the thread responses I found were more restrictive and for a longer period. Does anyone have any recent experience with this surgery? I don't know how much my surgeon knows about cycling either.

You might think about 4 weeks off the bike.
I went back to work after 4 weeks.( doctor said 6 weeks.)
Slipped and fell on a slick floor.
Darn it hurt.
Everyone heals at a different rate.

I had surgery for an incisional hernia on Friday and went to work on Monday, which was a mistake. I think your recovery will depend on your general level of fitness, plus how much risk you want to take. A fall or a slip could be a big problem.

Stock up on the painkillers. Hernia surgery hurts.

Doc told me a 4 to six weeks before getting back on the road. For the trainer he said to let pain be my guide. I was on the trainer in less than two and cleared to be back on the road in about three.
I made sure to stay totally bed bound for the first two to three days and then took it very easy for the first week. I tried to ramp up too quick after my vasectomy and let's just say I learned my lesson.

I found walking to be more uncomfortable from the bouncing than being on the bike. I think my time on the trainer did a lot to speed my recovery.

For me the only time the pain was an issue was when I sneezed.

Best of luck.

Wasn't riding bikes at the time but I was playing golf 10 days after and went back to work two weeks after. Just took it easy and all was well.

True 'dat. The first trip to the little room is a joy...not.

I had a solid four weeks before I was much good. Was back to work in two but very carefully.

It will go fine I am sure but it is a painful little sucker.

After my first one (left side), I was off the bike for a month, then rode for a couple of weeks, then left on a tour down the west coast. I never had trouble on the tour, except that I was woefully out of shape when I started.

After my second (right side, 12 years later), I was off the bike for about a month, then gradually got back on and rode myself into shape. I went on a tour a couple of months later. With the second one I had much more pain and it took much longer for the numbness to subside, but the problems weren't aggravated by the bike riding.

I was told 4-6 weeks by my surgeon each time I had the surgery. The 6 weeks is more realistic for me. Use your judgment on how it feels to you. I would not rush this as a recurrance tends to be worse and can become a regular thing, as mine did.

Huh? Hernia surgery hurts???? Not for me, it didn't. All I had to do was avoid lifting things and be careful not to do anything else to put strain on the muscles in the area for a month to 6 weeks. I wasn't biking at the time, but it would have been out...too much risk of sudden unplanned stresses.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. It looks like I shouldn't plan any rides until at least late Nov. I can just hope mine is one of the less painful experiences. It is surprising how common this surgery seems to be.

Left side, with mesh inserted via an incision that's probably 3" long, 2-1/2 weeks ago. Took it easy for the next three days, then went back to work almost full time for a week, full time thereafter. "Don't lift things heavier than 10-15 pounds for 6 weeks" per the doctor, and "avoid major hill climbing for a while" per a cycling friend who is a doc.
No real pain for me after the surgery; bumping the incision onto edges of tables gives a sharp pain now.
Doctor said that patients who don't follow the "no medium lifting" rule often come back to see him for the same side in about 3 years.
I'm focussing on not snacking too much, so I won't have as much to work off when I start riding again (trainer or occasional commuting in winter), and will have to regain conditioning -- oh, well, better than those sharp pains were!

Oh, be aware that between the anesthetic and the pain pills, your peristaltic action will take a vacation. Stock up on fiber (internally) before the surgery, and drink lots of water after, plus fiber in your diet. When things start moving again in a few days, you don't want to have to be straining.

Hmm, no one has really told me this. I'm scheduled for laproscopic inguinal surgery on both sides the first week of December. The doctor just said he'd send me home with drugs but no indication that it would be really painful...Really? Crap.

The drugs helped me - no pain from the incision early on. I'd say that a surprise sneeze today (3+ weeks after) is more painful than the immediate aftermath of surgery was. That said, you will find that simple tasks like getting out of bed, or even turning over in bed, will take some practice to avoid slight, sharp pains.
Then again, my surgery was on a Thursday, I lounged around for three days, and then didn't go in to work until mid-day, about 4 days after the scalpel.
Take it easy, and plan ahead now to move / lift / arrange anything heavy that you're going to want moved. In my case, once the pain from things tearing had passed, I had no real problems with pain in the couple of weeks before the surgery; climbed up and down ladders doing house painting, etc.

I had a surgeon who's a tri-athlete, so he was familiar with the stresses of riding. He told me to take it easy for a few days, then start riding a little to see how it went. In the event, I was off my bike for 10 days, then did a 4 mile ride, then off for 3 more days, then a 10 mile ride. Two weeks after surgery, I was doing my regular 10 mile commute and longer rides soon after. The surgeon advised me to pay close attention to my discomfort level during and after rides, which was good advice. I never pushed it while I was convalescing.
